DAY 31 - 2016 WEIGHT LOSS AND BLOOD GLUCOSE CHALLENGE

Christmas Eve 2015

Today is Day 31

Weight goal - 148 or lower
Actual weight - 146.6

Blood glucose goal - 89 or lower
Actual blood glucose - 83

Today is a Feast Day!

For me, that means a ketogenic diet - high fat, moderate protein and very low carb.  Each day, I will weigh in, check my fasting blood glucose, find out if I will feast or fast that day, update my chart and post it here on the big blog. I'm posting it to motivate myself not to give up, and if I think that anyone is looking at this, it will help to keep me accountable.

Well, I fasted yesterday.  All I had was several glasses of water, one cup of coffee and two cups of beef broth.  And the bathroom scale says that I GAINED 2.6 pounds.  I did notice yesterday that I was not in the bathroom very often, and when I woke up this morning I was bloated and didn't feel the need to urinate.  I did anyway, but it was very little.

So, the explanation is that, for some unknown reason, I am retaining 2.6 pounds of fluid.  I am going to a family party later today, and I really wanted to feel slim.  Oh, well.  Onward and downward!

30 DAYS DOWN AND 61 DAYS TO GO

24 FEAST DAYS AND 7 FAST DAYS - FASTING 23% OF THE DAYS

7.4 POUNDS GONE AND 10.6 POUNDS TO GO

41% OF THE WAY TO MY GOAL AFTER 34% OF THE DAYS

AVERAGE WEIGHT SO FAR - 148.7     AVERAGE BLOOD GLUCOSE SO FAR - 88

I made a few charts to track my progress.  The orange lines are my goals. The blue lines are my actual results.  The last chart is a little heat map to show at a glance how often I have actually had to fast to achieve the results I am after.

DAY 30 - 2016 WEIGHT LOSS AND BLOOD GLUCOSE CHALLENGE

January 11, 2016

Today is Day 30.

Weight goal - 148.2 or lower
Actual weight - 144

Blood glucose goal - 89 or lower
Actual blood glucose - 91

Today is a Fast Day.

For me, that means that all I will have today is water, coffee, tea, or broth, all without caloric sweeteners or fat.  Each day, I will weigh in, check my fasting blood glucose, find out if I will feast or fast that day, update my chart and post it here on the big blog. I'm posting it to motivate myself not to give up, and if I think that anyone is looking at this, it will help to keep me accountable.

Yesterday, I had no appetite and was finding it hard to eat.  I had a Bullet Proof Coffee for breakfast, and was not hungry again until dinner time.  In late afternoon, I did scramble up a couple of eggs with butter and cheese, just because I felt like I should eat something.  But in the evening, after a dinner of one and a half Jimmy John's Unwiches (which contained only 11g of carbs), I was still hungry.  We had bought peanut butter to use for the squirrel feeder, and I put around 9 grams of carbs worth on some celery and ate it after dinner.

All in all, not a bad day for carb consumption, and I did not overeat protein, so I do not know why my blood glucose went up.  A reading of 91 is still considered very good as far as diabetes goes, but I set my rules and I'm going to stick to them.

I find it interesting that my day-after-fasting weight of 144 did not bounce back up a little bit after eating yesterday.  But I'll take it!

Truth be told, I was considering fasting today anyway, because I am going to a family get together tomorrow, and I know I will be eating off plan, which I allow for special events.  When I know that there is a special event the next day, I think it is a good idea to get a jump on it by fasting the day before.  With a reading of 91, I now no longer have to make that decision, so it's all good! I'm going to try to eat semi-responsibly tomorrow, but I expect that I will have a small piece of cake.  I fully expect that I will be fasting again the day after the party, due to weight gain and blood glucose.

Yesterday, I ate perfectly for my plan.  I even limited the amount of protein I had at dinner.  But this morning my blood glucose is higher than my goal.  The only thing I can think of is that I was under a lot of stress yesterday, and stress can raise blood glucose.  I'm sure that a day of fasting will bring me back to where I want to be.

DAY 24 - 2016 WEIGHT LOSS AND BLOOD GLUCOSE CHALLENGE

January 11, 2016

Today is Day 24.

Weight goal - 149.4 or lower
Actual weight - 149.8

Blood glucose goal - 89 or lower
Actual blood glucose -101

Today is a Fast Day.

For me, that means that all I will have today is water, coffee, tea, or broth, all without caloric sweeteners or fat.  Each day, I will weigh in, check my fasting blood glucose, find out if I will feast or fast that day, update my chart and post it here on the big blog. I'm posting it to motivate myself not to give up, and if I think that anyone is looking at this, it will help to keep me accountable.

So here is the problem:  Even though I ate my regular high fat, medium protein and very low carb food yesterday, my blood glucose continued to go up and so did my weight.

I had BPC for breakfast, a large chef salad with bleu cheese dressing and no croutons for lunch and polish sausage with sauerkraut and onions for dinner.  I also had a small square of 82% dark chocolate in the mid-afternoon, breaking my "no snacking" rule.

It is possible that the salad was so large that it put me over on my carbs, or it could have been the chocolate.  On the other hand, eating too much protein can also cause blood glucose to go up, and I did have a healthier-than-normal portion of the polish sausage.

So today I am fasting.  Once I get back to normal, I will be more careful not to eat as much protein and see if that helps.

DAY 23 - 2016 WEIGHT LOSS AND BLOOD GLUCOSE CHALLENGE

Christmas Eve 2015
Today is Day 23.

Weight goal - 149.6 or lower
Actual weight - 148.8

Blood glucose goal - 89 or lower
Actual blood glucose - 97

Today should be a Fast Day, but we celebrate my son's birthday, and I must eat out.

I am really irritated today with my numbers.  I knew yesterday that I was going to be eating out today, so I was very careful about what I ate yesterday.  I even turned down a beautiful piece of homemade lasagna at a family member's house, due to the high carb count in the pasta.

However, on the way to that house, we stopped at the store to grab something to eat on the way, and checked the carb count on some deli chicken salad and egg salad.  The carb counts were very low, only about 4 grams, so I felt safe to eat it.  It is common knowledge that nutritional labels are often wrong, and when I saw my blood glucose this morning, I knew that it must be the case with the deli salads.  It's getting to the point where I cannot eat anything that is not prepared by myself with fresh ingredients.

In the meantime, I must eat today at a restaurant.  I will eat something low carb, like a hamburger patty and side salad.  Tomorrow, if my numbers are good, I will eat, and get right back on track.  If they are not good, I will be fasting tomorrow.

22 DAYS DOWN.  69 DAYS TO GO.

Christmas Eve 2015

I'm posting it to motivate myself not to give up, and if I think that anyone is looking at this, it will help to keep me accountable.

I have been making an effort to eat more on my feast days so that my metabolism does not get any slower.  Yesterday, however, was a low food day, but not purposely.  I was busy working and ended up having only BPC for breakfast and eggs for lunch.  I stopped at the store on the way home to buy the ingredients for a wonderful dinner, and a few minutes after I got home, my husband, Bill, vomited and we called off the dinner.  So I ended up only having a fat fast meal for dinner, because I did not want to fix a meal just for myself.

So, inadvertently, I ended up losing weight and I hit a new low for the challenge.

It's getting rather tiresome to keep recording everything I am eating, so unless I say that there was a change to the general way I eat, you can just assume that I am eating in the same way that I did for the first 20 days.
